The Neon Museum | Call for Reading Group Participants, Roscommon Arts Centre

In anticipation of the exhibition by Brian O’Doherty for the newly constructed visual art space at Roscommon Arts Centre, a dedicated reading group, titled The Neon Museum, will engage with O’Doherty’s extensive writing practice.

Originally from Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon, O’Doherty moved to New York in the 1960s, where he worked as art critic for the New York Times and as editor-in-chief of Art in America. As a writer, O’Doherty is probably best known for his highly influential series of essays published in Artforum in 1976, titled ‘Inside the White Cube: The Ideology of the Gallery Space’.

Led by arts writer and editor, Joanne Laws, The Neon Museum will run for 4 weeks in April/May. The weekly sessions will engage with some of O’Doherty’s critical writing (reviews and essays), literary works and his written correspondence with notable figures in the art world.

The Neon Museum welcomes readers from art and non-art backgrounds. Texts will be provided on the day, and we will collectively read and discuss key concepts as a group. Participants do not have to prepare for these sessions or read material in advance, however prior booking is necessary.

To express your interest in attending the reading group, please contact by April 1st.

The following sessions will take place in Boyle Library:

1. Sat 6 April (2-4pm): Selected Letters from ‘Brian O’Doherty 1970s-2018’ (ed. Brenda Moore-McCann)
2. Sat 13 April (2-4pm): ‘Driving to Las Vegas’ (1972 & 2016)
3. Sat 27 April (2-4pm): ‘The Deposition of Father McGreevy’ (1999)
4. Friday 3 May (2-4pm): ‘Inside the White Cube’ (1976)
