15 March to 14 April
Paintings by Ashley B. Holmes curated by Francesca Biondi.
Holmes’ images explore psychological landscapes using the iconography of houses. By layering acrylic skins, glazes and Perspex she creates a theatrical illusion of space through which Colonial, Federal and Victorian style houses float, fly and drown in decorative patterns. The houses have two facades, one to look out at the world and one to look into the subconscious.
Decorative patterns are often marginalised as superfluous but they are pervasive in the architecture of childhood. Within each vignette of vines or arabesques there is another pattern of negative space that is full of strange shapes that creep into the subconscious secretly undoing the comfort of decoration.
