Open Call | EMERGENCE Visual Art Award 2019

Application deadline: Thursday 13 June, 4pm.

The EMERGENCE Visual Art Award will be presented biannually to one visual artist based in Ireland, supporting the development and promotion of his/her practice. Produced under the guidance of Curator Catherine Bowe, the award has a monetary value of €15,000 and includes mentorship support over the award cycle and a solo exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre.

The successful recipient will be required to create a new body of work during the period September 19 – August 2021, which will be exhibited at Wexford Arts Centre during September- October 2021.

  • Solo exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre at the end of a two year period


For the purposes of this award, the term β€œemergence” is understood in the following ways and supports the following particular types of art practices:

  • Artists, of any age, with a third level visual arts education and three years’ post graduation experience.
  • Artists reengaging in their practice after a period of time or absence.
  • Artists who have created and publicly presented a modest body of independent works and are eager to progress in their professional and creative development.
  • Artists who state a clear case for their need to progress to the stage of development with their practice and career
  • Artists who demonstrate innovative experimentation in their practice and working cross disciplines.
  • In all cases, the artist possesses some professional experience – exhibitions, sales, contracted/paid commissions.

Entry Criteria

  • Not currently enrolled in a formal academic degree program (BS/BA, MS/MFA, etc.) or a vocational training program.
  • Work submitted must be unsupervised; work from thesis and/or graduate degree shows is supervised work.
  • Artists must demonstrate a pattern of producing work at some stage with their practice.
  • Artists must not be previous recipients of the award.​

Required Information

Applicants are asked to make a clear case of why the award would be of value to their practice and professional development at this time, and how it will enable them to progress to the next stage in their career.

Proposals should be for new work and where appropriate, be site-specific. Applicants should also consider the context of Wexford County and how they might engage with Wexford Campus School of Arts & Design in their proposal.

Submissions must be emailed to and include the following:

  • An up to date CV;
  • A statement about your work making a clear case of why the award would be of value to their practice and professional development at this time – 350 word limit;
  • A proposal in relation to the body of work which you intend to undertake – 350 word limit;
  • Timescale breakdown – research, production, delivery;
  • Budget breakdown – materials, travel, studio hire, etc.;
  • Examples of work to date i.e. documentation in the form of 10-15 Jpeg images, links to 3 films, videos or audio works;
