This intensive weekend course is aimed at anyone who has a basic understanding of etching and would like to develop their knowledge while also incorporating tonal shading through the aquatint technique.
Intaglio printmaking refers to the printmaking technique, involving working on what is usually a metal plate, whereby marks are made/etched onto the surface of a plate by exposing a plate to acid that has previously been covered in a soft or hard ground & ‘drawn’ onto. It is these etched lines and marks that form the image when ink is applied to the plate.
The aquatint process involves applying a powdered resin that results in the addition of various tones to an existing line etching. Aquatint in built up in layers to allow for a range of darker and lighter tonal areas within one print.
Participants will learn
• How best to apply ground to their plates
• How to transfer their images from page to plate
• How to approach various ways of working onto their plate
• Registration of and printing their plate
They will then incorporate the aquatint process into their work including learning about
• Stopping out a design
• Graduations of bite and its effects on an image
• Corrections and proofing the plate
• Registration and printing of the both plates.
Use of all tools and all materials are included in the course fee.
