International Residencies with Shiro Masuyama

Golden Thread Gallery
Saturday 13th October, 12pm – 2pm
FREE

  • Are you interested in expanding your international profile?
  • Do you want to find out more about how international residencies work?

In this artist talk, Shiro Masuyama will look back at the 22 artist residencies he has undertaken throughout his career, and how they have become a core part of his artistic practice.

As a result of the residencies he has previously been represented by galleries in Germany and Spain, he has lectured regular in Japan over the last 11 years, helping others to develop that side of their practice.

He will look at the differences between each residency and he will talk about how understanding the local arts scene is crucial. He will also share advice about which residencies he recommends and why.

Shiro Masuyama is a Belfast-based Japanese artist who is a studio holder and a board member of Flax Art Studios. He has developed his artistic practice through participating in numerous international residencies all around the world nomadically since 2002. After attending international residencies in Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin(2006) and Flax Art Studios, Belfast(2009), he settled in Belfast. To date he has participated 22 international residency programmes including Millennium Court Arts Centre, Portadown (2014-2015); National Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art Korea(2008); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2004-2005); and ISCP-International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York (2002-2003).
