When Artists Curate | Alison Green in|discussion at DIT Grangegorman

17 October, 6.30 to 8.30.

An increasing proportion of exhibitions are curated by artists rather than professional curators. Alison Green will present her recent book, When Artist Curate: Contemporary Art and the Exhibition as Medium, a critical history of visual artists curating exhibitions. She’s interested in the artist-curator as someone with a special responsibility for critiquing art’s institutions, who brings considerable creativity to the craft of making exhibitions and, through experimentation, someone who has changed the way exhibitions are understood to be authored and experienced. The talk will present examples of exhibitions or curatorial work by Goshka Macuga, Thomas Hirschhorn, Hito Steyerl, Joseph Kosuth and Felix Gonzalez-Torres.

Her recent publications include: ‘Articulate Bodies and Fractured Images: Carolee Schneemann’s Aesthetic Politics’ in exh. cat. Carolee Schneemann: More Wrong Things (Hales Gallery, 2017); ‘Stout’s Doubt’, Journal of Contemporary Painting (October 2016); and a co-edited journal issue, ‘Fifty Years of “Art and Objecthood”: Traces, Impact, Critique’in the Journal of Visual Culture (April 2017). She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Contemporary Painting and regularly writes art criticism for Source (Ireland) and Art Monthly (UK). Her first book, When Artists Curate: Contemporary Art and the Exhibition as Medium was published by Reaktion Books in May 2018.
