For over a decade The Drawing Studio has been running a 9-week evening course The Discipline of Drawing – Bargue’s Cours de Dessin. It introduced the Bargue Drawing Course to Dublin and has benefited artists, designers and students with all levels of drawing experience. The disciplined, process-led course aims to guide students to a deeper, broader vision of drawing. Conscious observation, control of hand, tools and graphic expression will be developed throughout, as well as exposing students to ways of drawing that have been developed over the past six-hundred years.
The Drawing Studio specialise in teaching essential classical drawing techniques to build a solid foundation in the skill of drawing. The course will start with a revelatory introductory talk and demonstration. The following 8 classes will focus on selected lithographs from the Bargue-Gérôme Cours de Dessin drawing manual of the mid 19th century. The Bargue prints will be visually broken down to simplified stages, and you will begin to appreciate the Bauhaus principle of “minimum means for maximum effect.” Students will then produce well constructed drawings, working methodically, using the skills and techniques taught.
Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh are among the many artists who were trained using the Cours de Dessin:
“The careful study, the constant and repeated drawing of Bargue’s Cours de Dessin has given me more insight into figure drawing. I’ve learned to measure and to see and to attempt the broad outlines…so that what used to seem to me to be desperately impossible is now gradually becoming possible.”
