Open Call | Sowing a Seed: Archives to Art, Galway County Council

Application deadline: 18 June, 9am

Arts and crafts practitioners residing in Galway County Council’s administrative area are invited to register through open call for participation in a pilot initiative led by the Archive Department entitled Sowing a Seed: Archives to Art.

Galway County Council Archives holds a unique and varied collection of archives preserved for historical, cultural and evidential purposes, spanning from the 17th century up to the present time. Artists are invited to delve into a selection of archive material, exclusively selected by the archivist, to explore, interrogate and reinterpret. Participation in the project will result in the creation of a contemporary artwork, utilising the archives as inspiration and processes intrinsic to individual creative practices.

Participation in this initiative is determined through invitation. Up to six participants will be invited from the Open Call process based on the expression of interest, merit of artistic practice and feasibility. A stipend is available for participants. The project will culminate with a group exhibition of work presented in October 2018. A catalogue will be produced to mark the occasion of this pilot initiative.

Sowing a Seed: Archives to Art invites curiosity, bridging history, archives and community through contemporary imaginings. Interested parties should email archivist@galwaycoco.ie for a detailed list of criteria for eligibility and a Registration Form.
