Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC) wishes to commission multiple public artists and digital specialists to create a permanent public art DIGITAL SCULPTURE TRAIL to be incorporated into the redevelopment of Hillsborough Forest Park. In order to qualify, the sculpture trail should be ‘Unique, Innovative and of World Class Distinction’, and as such the emphasis is on sculptures of the highest quality with a broad international appeal and incorporating cutting edge digital technology with an emphasis on AR [Augmented Reality].
LCCC commissioned a Hillsborough Tourism Master Plan in 2015 and associated Action Plan for developing the tourism product in the village and surrounding areas. As part of the Hillsborough Tourism Master Plan, LCCC have proposed the development of Hillsborough Forest, which is 150 acres of woodland adjacent to Hillsborough Castle and village. The forest incorporates a lake and mixed coniferous and broadleaved trees which sustain a range of fauna and wildfowl.
The overall redevelopment project comprises a visitor centre, a coffee shop, Adventure Play facilities, additional carparking, improvements to pathways, signage and seating. The £4.2m project is being funded by a number of sources including the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council.
Within the funding package up to £850,000 has been allocated for the provision of 8 large pieces of public art and 8 smaller interconnecting sculptures as well as the design and development of an AR APP [Augmented Reality Application]. The budget for the public art has been further divided, with eight major pieces allocated £590,000, the remaining pieces £160,000 collectively, with £100,000 for the AR [Augmented Reality] design and maintenance.
