Marcel Vidal RHA School Masterclass

Vidal will give a presentation of his work and will discuss his materials, palette and studio. In addition he will give insight into his photographic sources and his process of image selection through editing and cropping. The workshop will explore Vidal’s approach to oils with examples of paintings at varying stages. Starting in raw sienna and burnt umber participants will create a tonal underpainting. This will be followed by the application of thin layers of colour and glazes.

Marcel Vidal makes paintings and sculptures. He graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 2009. He works intuitively with a variety of materials, constructing distinctive sculptures, that often stage and frame his paintings. His approach to sculpture and its assembled chaos and combative insistence is strongly contrasted by his paintings made in oil and watercolour.

Vidal’s paintings are restrained, often withholding information, through rigorous cropping in an attempt to frustrate interpretation. The convergence of these two modes of production and their aesthetic contrast is what interests him.
