Léann Herlihy | Basic Talks at The Hugh Lane

Léann Herlihy is a performance artist based between Ireland and Poland. She is particularly concerned with the intersection of invisible power structures; addressing the position of the female body as a focal point of repressed histories and political desires. Largely influenced b the ancestry accounts of State repression, Herlihy often reflects on historical moments of collective resistance, excavating how these precedents may hold resonance in our current social and political experiences.
Recently, at the opening of Herlihy’s solo show the child She didn’t want but, the State did freelance curator, Katy Gaffney, introduced Herlihy’s previous works, as having “explored the theme of maternity in its most visceral iterations. With hard, defiant stance, uncomfortable in stiff leather or buckling beneath the weight of a glass pail filled to the brim with milk; Léann’s body becomes a breathing and vacillating metaphor for the plight of the Irish woman.”
Basic Talks is a series of informal talks with leading contemporary practitioners taking place on the second Friday of every month. Curated by Basic Space in partnership with The Hugh Lane, BASIC TALKS is an open platform for talks, panels, lectures and performances. Speakers will include artists, curators, writers and critics who will generate discourse on producing and exhibiting art.
