Intro to Monotype Printmaking at Limerick Printmakers

Monotype printmaking is a really accessible form of printmaking that is ideal for those seeking to experiment in a new medium. It’s fun, hands on, and can be adapted for use at home. It’s also completely non-toxic so is very suitable for complete beginners.

Unlike many other forms of printmaking, monotypes are a one off and are made by applying ink to the surface of a plate using various techniques – by rolling and layering colour directly onto a plate, by using various tools to apply ink directly to the surface – essentially painting or drawing onto the surface of the plate, and by incorporating texture and pattern into their pieces.

Participants will learn the basic methods and techniques used to create monotypes and will become familiar with the tools and materials required, while experimenting with colour, texture, and college to create abstract or representative artwork.

Participants will be encouraged to make larger scale work (up to A2) in order to explore the method and its many potential results. All those who take part will leave with multiple prints made using the various techniques.
Use of all tools and materials are included in the course fee.
Participants are encouraged to bring photocopies of any imagery that they may like to work from and any textures that they would like to incorporate.

Suzannah O’ Reilly is a hugely prolific artist, printmaker and tutor. She is also co-founder and co-director of Parallel Editions, a fine art print editioning company based in Limerick city.
