Self-taught portrait artist Dave Duffy, who was recently invited by Sky Arts Portrait of the Year to demonstrate his unique techniques, is now giving a three day masterclass in Hyper Realism with colored pencil and various other tools in beautiful Dunmore East. The class is suitable for all abilities and covers a broad range of topics such as pencil techniques, substrates, lighting, human anatomy, perception, optical illusion, even psychology, among many other topics all aimed at encouraging students to think laterally and analytically, and be creative in how they depict reality.
The course will focus mainly on portraiture. Each facial feature is analysed seperately on day one and a brief demonstration of the techniques commonly used will be given where students can try them out for themselves.
Day two will focus on practicing and developing these techniques with some breaks throughout the day to discuss some interesting and strange optical illusions which can both hinder and enhance a portrait.
On day three students will be asked to bring a reference photo along with them to begin work on a portrait entirely of their own. Life drawing skills are useful here but not at all essential as students will have a chance to try a number of setup techniques like camera lucida, projection, feature tracing etc. The aim of the course is to create a portrait that looks like reality, so far more time will be spent on colour, texture and critical thinking than on freehand drawing.
