Gallery Talk | In My Room – Orla Fitzpatrick at Highlanes Gallery, Co.Louth

Friday 12 October, 1pm to 2pm.

Focusing on the ‘not sorry’ chapter of the exhibition: just a bit extraordinary, which is an intimate portrait of the Irish teenager, join librarian and photographic historian, Orla Fitzpatrick when she will expand on her essay In my room, from the exhibition catalogue, exploring ideas and themes and teenage bedrooms in film, art and popular culture.

The first chapter not sorry is an intimate portrait of the Irish teenager. At a time when almost everything is on virtual display, unrestricted disclosure is the norm and social networking profiles are updated daily, not sorry literally goes behind closed doors into the private territory of the bedroom and seeks to expose the individual beneath the public persona. Taking its title from one of the responses to a confidential survey, the work combines the personal expression evident on the walls, floors and other surfaces of the bedroom with participants’ frank, and sometimes, brutally honest written expression of their personal identity.

Orla Fitzpatrick is a librarian and photographic historian from Dublin. She works as the librarian at the National Museum of Ireland and writes about photography for Source magazine.
