Fire Station Artists Studios Announce Digital Media and Sculpture Bursary Awards 2019
Fire Station Artists Studios is delighted to announce the 2019 awardees for their Digital Media and Sculpture Bursary Awards. The awardees benefit from free access to the studio facilities for a 3 months period, as well as curatorial support and a stipend.
Sculpture
Alan Magee was born in Ireland and lives and works between Dublin and London. He holds an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, and a BA from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland. Awards include Florence Trust Studio Residency; Arts Council Ireland, Travel and Training Awards. He has notably exhibited at White Cube, London; Xi’an Academy, China; Maria Stenfors, London; Highlanes Museum, Drogheda and Ormston House, Limerick. Magee is currently a lecturer at Central Saint Martin’s and Wimbledon Colleges of Art and Design and is represented by Castor London.
Helen Hughes graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design with an honours BA in Fine Art and completed a Masters in Visual Arts Practices through IADT Dublin. Materiality is central to Helen’s practice where materials selected are often wilful, unpredictable and difficult to control. Working against their intended use by disrupting the designated functioning of these materials, the homogeneity of mass production is probed, and the materials are forced out of an inertia and endowed with a more tactile, human sensibility.
Neil Carroll is an emerging artist based in Dublin, Ireland. He received his MFA from the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University (June 2016) and his BFA from the National College of Art in Dublin (2010), achieving Distinction in both. Since 2010, Carroll has been continuously exhibiting in solo and group shows. He was awarded the IMMA 1000 studio residency award in 2018. In 2017 he was selected to exhibit as part of New Contemporaries 2017 in the UK. In 2015 he was the recipient of a fellowship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Maine, USA. He was previously awarded the Hennessey-Craig scholarship for painting at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin in 2012 and he has also received artist’s bursaries from the Arts Council of Ireland (2018, 2017, 2015).
Digital Media
Ella Bertilsson (SWE/IRE) and Ulla Juske (EST/IRE) met during their time as MFA students in NCAD and started collaborating in 2015. Since then the artist-duo have been using conversation as the generative ground for their multidisciplinary work, which uses storytelling, symbolism, staging and sound to produce a mood of absurdity, disquiet and unresolved suspense. Recently, the duo has completed a trilogy of works consisting of video installation, large-scale plywood structures, sound, construction materials and discarded mattresses and has been defined by the use of fictional characters: Beyond the Sandy Suburbs (Pallas Projects/Studios, Dublin, Artists Initiated Projects, 2018), Carrier of Memories (Dráiocht Inagural Commision, Blanchardstown, 2018) and 11.9 km Northwest of the City Centre (Hobusepea Gallery, Tallinn, funded by Culture Ireland, 2018).
Michelle Doyle is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans performance, sound design, installation and motion graphics. She is interested in the ownership of technology and digital communications and how power structures can be dismantled. Her recent work includes solo show Obedient City (2018) in A4 Sounds. Her 2019 projects include a live AV show at Quarter Block Party in Cork, a VR audiovisual release and show in Askeaton Contemporary. She makes live music performances and sound installations under the name Rising Damp.

Each year, FSAS provides opportunities for international curators to familiarise themselves with the Irish visual art scene, undertake research and make connections that will evolve into the future. In 2019 they will welcome:
