Fake Public Art Panel with Aideen Barry at Leitrim Sculpture Centre

Friday 5 October, 4pm

This professional development initiative gives artists the unique opportunity to find out exactly what happens in a public art judging panel, and experience examples of artistโ€™s applications, by becoming a panel member of a public art selection process.

Developed by artist Aideen Barry, the Fake Public Art Panel day allows 14 artists to assess a range of applications, all fake, but based on real examples that are submitted for commissions. The participants will get a great insight into the style, quality and content of applications, how much time each judge spends looking at the submissions and how decisions are reached.

Many artists are regularly making similar errors and limiting their chances of being considered for commissions. This workshop will show artists directly how the selection process works, the types of proposals they may be in competition with, and how important it is to make an impact and ensure there are no gaps in the information provided.

Professional visual artist Aideen Barry has a wealth of experience, both as an artist who submits proposals for public art commissions and as a selection panel judge. She has developed this initiative and will chair the day. At the end of the Fake Judging Panel there will be a presentation from Aideen outlining the key dos and donโ€™ts of submitting public art applications.

Participants are invited to read through all applications in the morning (they will have received a copy of the artistโ€™s brief the fake artists are responding to in advance). After lunch all applications are discussed as a group and via a process of elimination and scoring a final decision will be made and feedback notes decided upon for each applicant. The day ends with a power point presentation from Aideen outlining the key dos and donโ€™ts when applying for public art commissions and recapping on the main issues raised during the day. Handouts are made available for all participants.

The fee for the event is โ‚ฌ10 payable at registration. To register for one of the limited places email Maureen Carty at outlining why you want to attend.

It is essential for panel members to bring their own laptops. The event is open to all artists, working in all artforms. If it is oversubscribed priority will be given to Creative Frame members. If you are not yet registered with Creative Frame itโ€™s free to do so at
