Expressing The West! Urban Sketching Workshop with Róisín Curé and Pat Southern-Pearce, Galway City
Róisín Curé and Pat Southern-Pearce are renowned urban sketchers on the world stage, both present or past instructors at the annual international Urban Sketching Symposium, which takes place in a different host city every year. Pat is a lecturer in Manchester School of Art and Róisín, a private art tutor for over two decades, is publishing a guide to urban sketching later this year. These instructors will share their techniques for lively, expressive and vibrant urban sketches, no matter what the scene before you. You will capture the atmospheric and colourful street life of Galway – the buskers, the waterways, the buildings, the music and pub life.
Róisín and Pat are helpful and enthusiastic, and each has a healthy online following. They are always happy to help, encourage and advise their fans.
Róisín’s workshop module will cover capturing people in motion, telling a story, making colours pop through the use of light and shade, dramatic compositions and making an impact with a line drawing.
Pat’s workshop will concentrate on lettering, creating a sensitive line, expressive skies, the use of whites and “catching the moment”.
Materials required will be a small box of watercolours in half- or full pan, a fountain pen (with a fude nib if possible), colouring pencils, travel brush, sketchbook.
Teaching will be all day, with a break for lunch, and will be on a relaxed / social basis in the evening (ie come and sketch in the pub if you like!) Two full days of teaching are followed by a third when the tutors will demonstrate and then help with troubleshooting on an individual basis.
