Exhibition Tours of War Changes Its Address: The Aleppo Paintings by Brian Maguire at Wexford Arts Centre
The Arts Department of Wexford County Council in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre are delighted to offer two free tours of the exhibition ‘War Changes Its Address: The Aleppo Paintings’ by artist Brian Maguire, which brings together a selection of recent works resulting from a visit to Syria in 2017.
The first of our tours will take place on Thursday, 29th of November at 4.00pm. This tour will be facilitated by artist David Begley and all are invited to attend.
The second tour will take place on Monday, 3rd December at 11.30am and will be facilitated by Deirdre Buggy as part of the Wexford Cultural Companions Scheme.

As one of Ireland’s most esteemed visual artists, Brian Maguire has distinguished himself through his socially and politically engaged career and artistic practice. Known for his commitment to, and deep engagement with each place and person that inspires his work, his visceral paintings are symbols of solidarity, respect, and documentation. This exhibition grew from Maguire’s own experience of the aftermath in Aleppo, and developed in response to the refugee crises which has arisen because of this conflict.
Documenting the destruction in Aleppo, Maguire’s paintings offer a visceral and unmitigated insight into the physical consequences of war. The stark absence of life within these painting’s, emblematic of the consequences of war, stands in contrast to our expectations of living city spaces. Once filled with bustling people and life, the crumbling structures are skeletal reminders of the communities and people destroyed through violence.
War Changes Its Address: The Aleppo Paintings runs in Wexford County Council, Carricklawn until Monday 3rd December 2018. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm.
