Encaustic painting is a tactile, immediate and ancient painting process using molten, pigmented beeswax. This in depth course will explore the broad and varied possibilities of the process of encaustic painting. It will be predominantly studio-based, with demonstrations, critiques, group meals and short trips to soak up the North Mayo landscape, ambience and light.
The course will take an experimental approach to exploring encaustic paint’s inherent qualities- translucency/opacity, texture, malleability and chance. It will cover tools and methods used to build up/break down/manipulate layers and ways of combining encaustic paint with oil paints and oil bars/pastels. It will also cover encaustic monoprinting, collage and embedding photographic imagery. Discussions about developing a personal visual language and self-critique are integrated in the course. There will be plenty of one to one, giving space for the development of each individual artist’s vocabulary and vision.
The course will also cover making encaustic paints and initial encaustic studio-set up information. It is suitable for artists working both abstractly and figuratively and is open to all levels from beginner to advanced, the needs of each individual will be addressed.
