Egon Schiele’s career was short and intense. A protégé of Gustav Klimt, he made artworks which tried to depict the psychological world as well as examining the female figure in an analytical and detached way.
With particular reference to Schiele’s life-drawings and self-portraits, this course will allow students to explore his working methods and artistic responses to the model. Using a series of linked classes with exercises on line, composition, and gesture, this short course will look at how Schiele’s drawings can still be shocking and provocative, and how his methods might influence your own practice.
This course is a part of a linked series of courses on Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) and his mentor Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918). The two artists shared much in common, and their work was intertwined while also being distinct. These short courses combine to present an on overview of how the two artists worked, thought and produced art in the early years of the twentieth century.
