Art and the Environment Short Course at UCC, Cork

This short course offers an introduction to contemporary and historic art works and thinking connecting art and the environment. Combining art history and philosophy, students are encouraged to develop a new understanding of creativity and the environment. By examining art works that respond to specific environments and contexts, human relationships to nature are questioned. In this current time of crisis and co-dependency of human and non-human, it is ever more important to create new dynamic engagements with the environment. Artistic responses in the last century include fragile temporary sculptures of found leaves, ritual cleansing of rubbish-laden rivers and built amphitheaters to view the night sky. From crisis response to celebration, human connection to nature and environment through art is myriad and complex. This short course offers a visual and intellectual map and overview. This course is taught by Aoife Desmond an interdisciplinary artist and lecturer.
