Abstraction and Representation with Gabhann Dunne | RHA School Masterclass

This 2-day course will focus on how oil paint allows for a space in between abstraction and representation. Instruction will concentrate on working to improve brushwork and other systems of mark making. Also included will be colour mixing, grounds, glazing and tonal balance. The artist will give a demonstration and participants will take part in group discussions and individual feedback will be provided.

The lucent colour palette in Gabhann Dunne’s work gives it a visionary, almost poetic quality. Topographical features, figures, buildings and animals emerge from a richly-opaque ground, conjuring a hauntingly-beautiful parallel world. He uses this romantic landscape to critique the marginalization of animal spaces, often appropriating and re-working found imagery to complement his invented narrative.
